Its almost impossible to ositively identify this kind of fern from a simple photo of the fronds, The first one could possibly be an Athyrium, probably filix femina.
The second one The second is most probably one of the Dryopteris, possibly the crested form of Filix Mas, but there are others. For many you need to see the spores on the back of fertile fronds in late summer. Does either of these sound familiar?

Is the 2nd pic Dryopteris affinis 'Cristata'?

Great Longleaf, that's the one isn't it, affinis not filix mas.
I've even got one - must be losing my grip if I ever had any...

Sorry for long delay in thanking you all. Yes dryopteri rings a bell not heard of the other one athyrium but the name polystichum seems to ring a bell would that be possible, I wonder. Many thanks to all for your replies. ~ phloxie.

Yes it could be a polysticum but there are lots of them and I wouldn't like to venture on guessing which one...you'd need a detailed fern book in the late summer.
