When should I prune my tree peony. I was always under the impression that you don't prune them.

Mine get huge, I cut them back hard whenever they start getting in the way and they always come back, usually bigger and better. They are the species type (Paeonia lutea), the oriental hybrids are often grafted and probably shouldn't be treated like this!

Many thanks. One of mine is about 5ft tall and is very gawky it needs a trim but I don't know the species type and I don't want to spoil it!
