I have white chalky spots on the trunk and branches of my large and healthy bay tree. When I scrape these small blotches off it is like sticky cotton wool. What is it, and how do I get rid of it, will it spread to other plants?

On plant Laurus nobilis

its a form of scale insect. if there arent too many, pop on a pare of rubber gloves and squish them under your finger and thumb. then gently wash the bark with warm soapy water. then you only have to watch out for further scales.
