I dragged out a couple of bucketfulls of compost from my bin yesterday and found it to be full of lively little red worms. Does this mean it's not ready yet or can I use it ?

Use it. The presence of those kind of worms indicates that the compost bin is working nicely. They will just go off into the soil.
