My bleeding heart was coming back to life this season, then, BAM! It died over the course of two days. I am heartbroken. It was full and beautiful for years, now gone. Any ideas?

they don't like drying out so has that happened. it may well come back next year as if nothing had happened.

While many species of Dicentra are long lived, the common D. spectabilis can be short-lived.

Thank you folks- I don't know what kind of Bleeding Heart it was- I rent and it was here before me. I always took care to water it, sometimes with the birdbath water. I hope it wasn't that!

Birdbath water shouldn't have been a problem, especially if you changed it regularly. I wouldn't consider it enough water to live on, but it probably goes farther in Massachusetts than where I live! You might want to search images of Dicentra, and see which "mug shot" fits the plant that you had.
