I have fallen for white hydrangeas with big bolshy flowerheads. Am after some growing tips and varueties that can be grown in a (large) pot. Any ideas or suggestions?

I wouldn't recommend putting a hydrangea in a pot at all.

I have an Annabelle and it would certainly have to be a pretty big pot. The flowers do tend to get too heavy for the stems but maybe this doesn't happen with Strong Annabelle. An advantage with these is that you can cut them back much harder than the other kinds.

Ok. Might have to find a spot in my border then. Full sun or part shade?

Wisdom says part shade but mine is south facing and gets full sun from mid-late morning.

Morning sun is fine, evening sun is fine. Bright Shade or dappled sun during the day. They do need some sun in order to flower. Avoid deep dark shade.

You're dead right Stera, I believe that's why the new variety was introduced as the original plants couldn't support their flowers.

Well I wish I'd waited...though with careful pruning they seem to be holding up rather better this year. All my hadrangeas are doing well with the full glare of sun from late morning until sunset. Perhaps they haven't read the instructions... (Oh, except one that gets only early morning and very late evening and that is so miserable its coming out this autumn)

Previous question
Hydrangea Arborescens Incrediball, Strong Annabelle would be a good choice but best grown in the ground as it will need constant watering if grown in a container.
