I have a v old caster oil plant ,over six feet by six feet,the top leaves are now pointing south and although greenish/yellow appear to be dying off.there is small groth on the main and lower branches.should I cut it down to those ?

Unless you mean Aspidistra elatior, common name Cast Iron plant. If you do, you can split it in half and repot the sections, its probably looking sick because its run out of root room.
A photo would be very useful.

wont be aspidistra if its six feet tall. I suspect it is the false castor oil plant. you can prune it with success. so yes prune it back and make sure you give it a decent feed.

I think you mean you have a false castor oil plant, Fatsia japonica, because the castor oil plant, Ricinus communis, grows as an annual in the UK and would never get very old.
