Oh dear, the times I see this in people's pots and tubs - first time in a hanging basket though. All those sprawly stems with tiny white flowers and small leaves are a weed, never known its name - you'll find all the growth comes off one, tiny, thin main stem, and that's the stem with the roots, so get it out by the root if you can. There may be more than one in there, but its not inconceivable its just the one, well grown with all the care you've been giving it.

I'm not actually seeing any ivy at all - there's something with a larger, lobed leaf growing towards the back thats neither ivy nor pansy.

Looks like another weed to me. Did you actually replant this year?

A fine crop of chickweed, Stellaria media!

I see a pot of weeds. I'd dump the whole thing and start over with new compost/potting soil & new plants.

I'm smiling as I read this.
Hubby took out the pansies in the trough on the front of the house because they were really looking shabby and replaced with three begonias.

We now have begonias and HUNDREDS of little pansy seedlings. And not a single weed.

I love begonias but still can't manage to over-winter the tubers.

Thank you all i am a complete amatuer so really appreciate any help. Bamboo i had never seen this before anywhere in my garden and while it had been growing had hoped it was the ivy coming back however last couple of weeks become apparant this wasnt the ivy but thought id check first as some plants leaves look different before they mature the plants in the middle is a winter pansie still... I hope. Moongrower no it was a completely dead winter basket from last year i just removed the dead growth and started to rewater this spring when it showed signs of new growth i just left it and kept watering. Landgirl and bathgate thanks guys. At least my neighbour has probably been having a good giggle at my watering and nuturing of it. (:

I don't see any winter pansy in your basket, as has already been advised, dump the whole lot and start again. Hanging baskets need to be replanted every year using fresh compost.

Thanks moon grower i will do but for now I have removed all of the chickweed out of the basket and replanted some ivy from another pot and kept the winter pansie center as is really pretty when flowers.

Point is that it isn't a pansy... just another weed! And, if you've planted the ivy into the existing compost it is going to have a hard time surviving as there is no nutriment left. Remove the ivy, sling everything else into your compost bin and start again with fresh compost. Winter pansies are, in general, annuals so you have nothing to lose - the plant in the middle of your hanging basket does not even have pansy leaves!

There may or may not be the remnants of a pansy in there, but usually, by around May (if planted the previous autumn) or June they've got really leggy and often just die out. Sometimes they seed themselves, if you're lucky, but generally, they need replacing. Its usual to plant a basket up in autumn to go over winter, then replant mid to end of May with summer stuff like trailing petunias, geraniums and lobelia, that sort of thing, then replant again in autumn with winter stuff, so twice a year really, though many people don't bother with a winter basket, just doing a summer one. As its almost August, I'd plan on turning it all out, keeping any bits you want like the ivy, refilling with fresh potting soil, and planting with another winter pansy or three in September, when the winter stuff starts becoming available.

Moongrower i know it doesnt look like a pansie the leaf look more like a chrysanth but started to show some flowering signs so I will see what develops and will move from basket as too tall and start again. Thanks again. Bamboo thank you thats great advice and i will be replanting the whole basket for winter the plant in the centre is just showing signs of flowering but the leaf and height dont seem to be that of a pansie so will move to another spot and start fresh thank you for the advice all appreciated being a novice. ?
