have you any idea what this is growing on the end of long branch of a fairly old climbing rose/old fashioned hedge rose.

It's known commonly as Robin's Pincushion - its a type of gall caused by a gall wasp. This growth will have larvae inside which will overwinter and leave next year - common on wild roses, seen occasionally on some cultivated roses. Does little damage to the rose, other than these growths.
