An old war (Korean) buddy of mine just moved to central Florida...had enough of snowy winters...while at the Veterans Hospital for a checkup there he found this plant used in their landscaping which he and found quite attractive and sent me a picture for an ID. I have no idea of what it is. Can you help ID this for my friend and I?

Sorry Loosestrife as I'm sure you already know this would be a guessing game...

It's one of the Crotons, specifically, Codiaeum variegata, maybe the variety 'Mammy', but there are loads of named varieties, with leaves which vary in size and colour.

Check with member Delonix1. He'll tell you exactly what this is.

So how is this guessing game going MG?:) Bath, I sent Delonix1 a PM.

Well as it would seem Bamboo has hit the nail on the head no guessing from me :)

Nothing wrong with wanting confirmation of my ID, although, obviously, the source which suggested you need it has somewhat suspect motives; if Delonix comes up with something else, I'd like to know please, Loosestrife, but I'd stake my reputation on its being what I said it is. But confirmation's always nice...as is learning something knew, which is always a possibility.

What I think happened Bam is that Bath made the suggestion before reading your answer. You are all very kind to answer my questions and make suggestions so what you see is my effort to recognize and follow though on all of them as much as I can.

Well, you've made me smile Loosestrife - you're clearly a 'glass is almost full' kind of person! Unfortunately, though, previous experience on here casts doubt on your view of it... but no matter, its not that important. Still like to know what Delonix says, specially if its different from what I said.

Lol!

Actually, Bam in my younger years, yes, the glass was either half full or half empty and the big push was to fill it up for my family. Now though I have the luxury of viewing that glass half filled with water as just right. No word from Delonix so far.

Loose. You did absolutely nothing wrong and don't let anybody make you feel guilty. You're free to ask anybody anything you wish and you don't even need a reason.

Loosestrife2:

It is indeed, Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammy'. It should be pretty easy for your friend to grow this in Central Florida, most years. It's a really tropical shrub which cannot tolerate cold temps. I've had one in my back yard for 6 years. Luckily, it grows very well outside all year here in San Diego. It seems to like more sun than most varieties. It's also not very drought tolerant at all.

Here's a pic of my plant.
