Good morning, I put in verbena coreopsis earlier in the year they have flowered beautifully but I had a collection of cottage garden plants that I put in and the label got mixed and I need to move them to the back of my garden. Can I move them now while the soil is still warm and swop them with my scabiosa. Thank you

You haven't said which Verbena (not all are fully hardy), but generally, yes you can move them now, though you should try to keep a good rootball round each so they're less aware of being moved. Water in well.

Now is the best time to move them. Dig the hole first & add some nice rich compost to the planting hole & backfill. As mentioned grab the whole root ball with the soil and all, place gently in the hole, backfill & water. The top of the root ball should be an slightly above the soil line to allow for settling.

For clarification purposes, when you replant them, settle them in the hole at more or less the same depth they were previously, backfill with soil, tread them in to firm them, rake up the top of the soil lightly where you've trodden, or rake over more soil as necessary, so they are at the same level they were previously.

FYI: Not good to "tread" upon the soil of a freshly planted shrub or plant. "Treading" will compact the soil around the plant too tightly. The plant will be stressed to send out fine tender roots through tightly compact soil that was trodden upon. Water must percolate down to the root zone where it's needed. Simply tamp the soil down firmly with your bare hands. That's all. Let nature do the rest.

Plant it slightly above grade because it will naturally settle to the correct planting depth in a few days. The plant will sink too low if you plant it AT grade.

We are all entitled to our opinions - but of course, some of us are more experienced with UK gardening than others. I've been gardening professionally for almost 40 years, so far from changing the advice I've given, I now reiterate it.

No doubt a third comment will be made, to which I shall not respond, but ultimately, Mysweetpea, its your decision to choose from the advice you've been given.

well I always firm plants in to prevent wind rock. large plants get the 'boot' to firm them in and smaller plants the heel of my hands. Usually works for me and I am that old :o)
