I have a large beech tree in my 80ft border. I would like to plant right up to the base of the tree. Apart from spring bulbs what plants would survive. It is a West facing border

Hardy geraniums such as G. macrorrhizum and G. nodosum spring to mind. Tiarella wherryi and T. cordifolia, too. You could also get Cyclamen coum going there for the winter.

Thanks Spritzhenry. Just googled the Wherryi and Cordifolia and love both of them. They will definatley be on my list.

Try, too, epimediums, and evergreen ferns such as polystichum polyblepharum. Phil J

I also have a very large beech tree. look at my plants listed and see if anything takes your fancy. I have lots of plants and there is always something in flower all year round.
