Dahlias. As I am new to growing dahlias I am not sure what to do. I still have a flowering dahlia in my garden (although it does look exhausted) My question is do I leave it out until we get a frost when the foliage dies back or do I lift now?

You can do either but it might be best to do it soon just in case the weather suddenly gets bad and deters you from going out there. I think I'd just pic the flowers and go for it.

I lifted half of mine yesterday and put them in the greenhouse. they wont get watered now and when they are dry I will clean them up, checking for vine weevil etc and store them in dry sawdust until spring.

Am I right in thinking that some growers dust the tubers with something before storing, I'm sure one of our former members told us that, he used to grow them for showing, unfortunately he took the hump a number of years back and deleted everything before he left us, been wracking my brain here, think it was something sulphur...

Don't know abut garden shops but you can get it from equine suppliers if you're near any. You'd probably have to buy rather more than you need though!

Oh thanks S'burn and Stera, I remembered the gents blogs but as I said they are no longer there, isn't it a shame when that happens, he was also the one who advised me on getting the best out of my sweetpeas....
