We need a bit more information please - how long have you had the plant? Is it in the ground or in a pot? Did you notice anything wrong with it before it died?

Maybe because its winter all the leaves have dropped off

yes I wonder if it has just lost its leaves due to winter. mine often stays leafy if it is mild but can just be twinning stems in a cold spell.
scratch a bit of the bark back on a stem. if it is green underneath then it is alive. the tops may well die back but it can grow again from the base.
