Maybe...except he grows them outside. Crotons have a dual nature. Maximum growth and most typical form occurs at high light levels, around 450+ foot candles, for at least 12 hours a day. On the other hand, maximum red color develops best at more moderate light levels, around 300-400 foot candles. Commercial growers usually grow the plants in very bright greenhouses, and then finish them in a somewhat dimmer environment for a couple months before sending them to retailers.

Those LED shop lights from Home Depot or Lowes are ideal for plants.

Croton loves as much light as you can give them. It needs a lot a light to develop their bright colors. It should be kept warm, also. It can loose leaves if the temps get too cool.
I grow my crotons outside in some full-sun. They need shade from intense, hot sun here.
