Any idea what these bugs are. Found them on a newly planted bareroot standard rose in April about 2 weeks ago. Munching like crazy...!

Wow ! Thanks, used a bug spray (Ultimate Bayer-Provado), hopefully they ok, haven't checked for a few weeks. One of my clients ! I go round tomorrow and check it out....

No, they are adult Rose Sawfly. :-)

Just type adult rose sawfly and voila!
Apart from Chafer Beetles being larger than this, even the Rose Chafer which is smaller than the Cockchafer, these are most definitely Rosa Sawfly (Arge pagana). Look carefully at the first picture Steve. The lower insect on the stem has the orange abdomen and the membranous wings are raised slightly above the body. Thorax and head are dark or blackish in colour.

Rose Chafer is Green anyway (Cetonia aurata).

I had them a few weeks back, and had no idea what they were, but they were sprayed anyway.

Possibly Rose Chafers? If so, dispose of quickly - they'll be laying eggs which turn into Chafer grubs which will live in the ground for ages nibbling every root they come into contact with and killing as much of your garden as possible! Nasty little *******!
