Help with Magnolia Red Lucky standards, please

I've just taken delivery of four bare rooted Magnolia Red Lucky standard shrubs.
I have two questions, please:
1. What should I do with them in the immediate short term? Each root is in a polythene bag with an elastic band around it. Should I take the bags off? Should I give them any water? Is it OK to keep them in the garage until I can plant them?
2. As they allegedly grow to 5', I am going to start them off in pots. What mixture would be best to plant them in?

I assume they are not in leaf. remove the plastic bags from the roots before potting them up.
Pot them up in a john innes no3 or 2 type compost and keep just damp and sheltered in a cool greenhouse / cold garage until the thaw has set in then put them in a sheltered spot ;lea of a wall but make sure they don't dry out.
spread the roots out fully in their new pots and don't bury them any lower than the depth they were buried at before.

Thanks very much. I'll plant them up as soon as we have a thaw. I can't get to my pots or cost at the moment

Wherever you plant them it is important that they do not get sun first thing in the morning.

I bought 1 of these standards as well. It's been potted up in JI3. I left the pot outside wrapped in bubble wrap but close to the house wall. It has tiny buds present but had been pruned prior to delivery, presumably to get it into the delivery box. Is it likely to flower this year?

Before potting them up, I would soak the roots in a bucket of water for about an hour or two so that they are re-hydrated, then pot them up asap as mentioned above. Keep the soil moist & don't let the pots freeze. They are outdoor trees, so that's where they should be.

Umm, Canalhopper? What I have been reading indicates that it will grow to 6 meters tall, not 5 feet. In a few years, they will probably have to come out of the pots.

My standard is a grafted specimen and the info from the supplier says 180cm after 10 years

Hi, I would keep the plastic on them to preserve moisture, but get them planted up a s a p, I think for pots, depending on how long you're going to keep them in pots, if only for a short while john innes no 2, for longer term no3, both with added grit, Derek.
