What sort of Cornus did you want? There are many dwarf varieties of Cornus Kousa which have excellent flowers but even some of those could well be too big and would do better in a sunnier spot. Then there are the Cornus (Dogwoods) varieties such as Alba Sibirica and Winter Fire which are grown for their coloured stems which you can cut back down to their base every couple of years to maintain their colours. They also do well on wet, heavy clay soils. There is also a very attractive variety of low-growing, creeping plant, Cornus Canadensis which well worth a look.

Just in case you didn't know Callie the red stemmed ones need to be cut right be cut right back in the early spring because you only get the red stems on the young growth.

So Callie, have a good look round your garden and if possible site it where the morning and/or evening sun will shine on it as that's when the red stems look their best.
