when you say violets do you mean Viola oderata etc. if yes then here in the uk they are easy. the wild common dog violets, Viola riviniana look after then selves and can become a weed if it seeds into the lawn. they are happy in semi shade but in full sun named varieties of Violet will need watering in dry spells. hope this helps.
