Is now the time to prune hardy fuchsias and should it be to ground level? I live in the South - East.

Agree with Bamboo . . . cut to just a few inches above the ground. If there are new shoots, cut to just above a new leaf.

Sheilabub - advice from the Fuchsia Society is to actually take them down to about quarter of an inch, effectively to the ground, even if they've got healthy shoots well above that. They reckon you get a stronger, healthier, bushier and less gawky plant by doing that. But some years, after a mild winter, I might not quite follow their advice!

I've tried both ways and found there wasn't much of an advantage in leaving longer stems. I cut to just above the ground but not yet - there could still be a frost. Wait until there's a good showing of young shoots first. Had a good look around this afternoon and there was no sign of new growth yet.

Just shows what a difference where you are makes - I cut mine back last week here in West London, they were shooting all over the place

Thanks everyone. I would imagine in the coming week, which is going to be warm, I'll be able to do it.

Goodness Bamboo! I knew London was warmer than
most places but that's amazing!

Fascinating! Shame I left all my hardy fuchsias in my previous garden, so have no way of checking progress here . . .

Well, these ones are all in a south facing, sheltered position against a wall, which would also increase the temperature around them....

Yes and yes - if you can see new growth starting, then cut them now.
Some of the much larger species fuchsias such as F. magellenica, if they're five or six feet and still green and bushy, can just be cut back as necessary, but smaller varieties are best cut down almost to the ground.
