Do you take dead heads off as they appear or wait until plant has stopped flowering for the season?

Answers

It depends on the plant whether its essential to deadhead as soon as they appear - some will produce more flowers if they are deadheaded (like sweet peas), others it makes no difference (like daffodils).

Most people deadhead when they see dead flowers just for tidiness, rather than waiting till the whole thing's got no flowers.

It's best to deadhead as they appear. This keeps a tidy appearance and conserves energy to the plant. However, towards the end of the growing season, September onward, I let my plants go to seed so I can have seeds for next year and to supply a food source to wildlife over the lean colder months.

That's very true SBG, like my viburnums for example with their shiny red & black berries.

when one of my girls was little she deadheaded all my broad beans. I couldn't be cross as she had helped dead head all the daffs a few weeks earlier. She said she didn't like broad beans when I told her we wouldn't have any for tea later in the year. It did make me smile .. a bit.

lol that happened to me with Brussels Sprouts. The smell alone would make me gag; now I actually grow them myself.

Glad you kept calm Sbg. One of my sons tried to help me in the garden & chopped all the new growth off the raspberries, as well as the old.
