I have a pear tree in my garden but when I pick them to ripen they don't soften they tend to go rubbery can anyone please tell me why this is and is there anything that can be done to make them soft.

Conference pears don't go soft like other pears but stay firm even when ripe.

Picking time for conference pears is late September. Some will fall off before that. If they are picked too soon they may not fully ripen for some reason. Williams is first on my trees and it is obvious they are ripe. Concord has huge pears this year......picking time October. Doyenne du comice picking mid October. All group C for pollination or self fertile.....more to pears than meets the eye. If you try to eat a pear before it is ripe.....it tastes of nothing in particular. When pear trees were huge there was no problem they just got on with it, and you knew your pears were ripe when you darn't walk underneath!!!!!

Conference pears are good for cooking - in red wine, crumbles & pies for instance. They're a bit hard for my taste as an eating pear.

Thanks Beattie I'll get my daughter to cook me a crumble as she cooks the best crumbles by far she made us a blackberry and apple one the other day and it was so gorgeous we have asked for another.
