This is popping up all over my garden. It's pretty, but I will have to keep it under control I think. A freebie from somewhere!

Looks the same as the one in Siris' latest photo (Star of Bethlehem) . . . but I wouldn't have known it otherwise!

Actually a British wildflower but very uncommon in the wild.

Yes, it is the same as Siris's. Didn't know it was called "star of Bethlehem" I know that as something different,
Stellaria, Stitchwort, but that's how it is with common names. Have just found it though in my wild flower book.
It's, Ornithogalum umbellatum, so now I know! Thank you. I have never seen it growing in the wild.

Thank goodness for latin names Feverfew. I have seen 'Star of Bethlehem' applied to O.Saundersiae and O.nutans. Knowing exactly what you want using the botanical name comes in handy, until the 'experts' use DNA screening to change the name. I have not seen this growing wild here either but it propagates itself by bulbils so could become invasive if not dug out regularly. Dead heading before it sets seed will not stop it creeping onward underground.

Scotsgran I've read its only native to the East of England but naturalised in some other places.

Steragram it seems to be an interesting plant if you read the list of Common names listed in the following link. https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/11962/Ornithogalum-umbellatum/Details
The RHS name it common star of Bethlehem, dove's dung, eleven o'clock lady, Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon, nap at noon, sleepy Dick, summer snowflake and ten o'clock lady. They say it can be invasive.
Avon Bulbs are one stockist

Scotsgran, thank you for the info about it creeping underground. I had no idea & I've been dead heading to remove the seeds. I will have to watch out & dig it up carefully so it doesn't become a menace plant. Very pretty though.

You are welcome Feverfew. Thank you for showing it. I grow a lot of alliums and I come across these little tips when researching what to grow. It is very pretty. You could cut the bottom off a pot, plant in the garden and the pot will be easily dug up to remove excess bulbils. If you think the bulbs go deep use a clematis pot.

Scotsgran Jack go to bed at noon is quite different in Staffordshire (never seen it yet in Wales) Up there its Tragopodon praetensis, one of the dandeliony imitations...

Thank you Steragram, I googled the name and the RHS also ID Tragopodon praetensis as "Jack etc". As you will have noted I quoted from the RHS website above. Thank goodness we should be okay to buy a plant if we know its latin name. These two are very different from each other.
