Some I have grown successfully in my shady border are Buddleia, Aquilegia, Hellebore,Persecaria,Monarda and sweet williams bloomed lovely there this year to give a splash of colour.

Well, where do you start? There are so many. If you want a plant collection of one of this and one of that, I'll leave you to it with the link above but you could go with a "classic" combination of these plants. Ferns (Many), Hosta's (Many), Willow Gentian (Gentiana asclepiadacea), Epimedium's, and Geranium machorrizum.

ps the classic combination by the way is really simple and involves just ferns and the above mentioned Gentian species.

The Japanese Wood Grass Hakonechloa (green, gold and striped) is also an excellent plant, slow to start but sooooo worth it!
