I planted a small magnolia the winter before last .The colour of leaves is lovely and green but the leaves are constantly attact and eaten some round the edges or in total.Iam always inspecing and looking for offending creature but have not succeeded in seeing any thing.i put slug pellets round but that did not do any good and there was no traces of slugs.it was suggested that it may be vine weevle but there is no presence of the beetles.I will be very grateful for any ideas
thank you

they could well be vine weevil. they don't fly but walk up stems usual in the night. They then hide during the day.
could you add a photo of the affected leaves?
welcome to GoY too :o)

Agree, many of these critters are night feeders and usually burrow in the ground near the roots during the day, or under the leaves, or camouflage so well you can't see them though they are right in front of you.

thank you SEABURNGIRL and BATHGATE for your prompt answers.
I was told by google inquiries that the adult beetles can be clearly visible at night with the help of a torch.I tried on two nights running, one in early night time and one at midnight but was unsuccessful in siting any bugs.
does that mean that there is a different offender?
