We have lived in this house for 29 years and have a Fig planted by the previouse owners, but because of the poor planting, it never bears fruit. I read up it is best to restrict the routes, I now want to plant it in a large pot which I will bury in the ground, when should I dig it up, is it too late now or should I wait till later in the year.

I would suggest that early springtime would be the best. Having said, it does throw up one major problem. If as you say it's at least 29 years old, it could have a massive root system. You will only find out when you try to dig it up. It might be better, if you want to grow another fig, to buy a new one. If this is the case, I would go for the 'lined pit system, where you dig a large hole, line the sides with paving slabs and break up some old bricks in the bottom for drainage.
