My daughter asked for a couple of small tomato plants she could grow, so I potted one up in a large pot and gave her one in a 4 inch pot, together with an empty large pot, suggesting she should pot it up in the stuff in her compost bin,
Then she informed me that the compost had been in the bin for many years (10. .) should she use this ?
I realise modern composts are probably better but I’m experimenting with different soils, and if hers fails I have a glut of toms with which to supply her as I do every year.

Eventually everything will break down into compost (including us). The nutrients should still be available so why not grow tomatoes? They are extremely hungry & thirsty plants. She can still use it, but I would supplement with lime & fish fertilizer.

Thanks B, just what I wanted to hear. Will mention the fertiliser to her.
