my witch hazel has started to bear nuts but the lovely lemon catkin like flowers diminish every year - i didnt even know that witch hazels did actualy bear fruit - what can i do to encourage the flowers

The woody fruits that Witch Hazels (Hamamelis) produce usually have two or four seeds in them. I've looked. This will be a drain on the plants resources of course.

Also, as the shrubs get older, they produce less vigorous growth and so less new wood with flower buds. I would mulch heavily with plenty of compost and give a heavy dose of slow release fertiliser too such as Vitax Q4. This should help it if done over a few seasons.
