Should I add lime when planting cabbages. Someone mentioned it, but don`t know what advantage would be. I am new to veg. gardening

An old allotment holder advised me to dip the roots in lime when planting out. Sounds drastic but I did it every year and it worked. It prevents club root, which is an ugly distortion of the root which weakens the plant.
