I normally plant tulips & daffs in pots with a feature plant in the centre or on their own.
Has any one planted primroses, pansies or sweet william over them?

yes to all 3 and they work well. I also use very large pots and leave the bulbs in situ and replant summer bedding too. every spring I put fresh compost in the top 2" with slow release granular feed in them.
some pots have been doing well 10 yrs on. this year I will take everything out and repot the bulbs in the garden and use fresh bulbs and perhaps a colour theme change. :o)
