Hi everyone,
Please could you tell me if there is any way of telling what way your garden faces without the use of a compass?

That's near enough! Sunrise and sunset positions do vary quite a lot with the seasons so if you want to be precise its it shines due south at midday in the middle of winter. But just look where the shadows are. The place thats in shade all afternoon is north facing.

On September 21 and 22, the sun will rise from exactly due east, and set due west. Right now, it'll be rising just a squidge north of east, and setting just a squidge north of west. At noon, the sun will always be coming from somewhere near due south--unless you're on daylight savings time! :)

There's probably an app for that?

Thank you everyone, that's all really helpful. You're probably right Darren, but I don't actually own a mobile phone and don't really want one either, lol.

What do you need an app for Darren? it can't really tell you anything else! Or you can use a watch.Hold it horizontal and point the hour hand at the sun. Then half way between that point and twelve o'clock points south. (That's if you
are in he northern hemisphere...) I forget whether thats for GMT or BST but it doesn't make much difference for what Lisam needs.

Well, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so notice from which direction it shines into the garden in the early morning and you can work it out from there.
