Notice the compost bin on the right which is almost full, in which I was hoping to put the zebra plant. I guess the waste bin will be more appropriate.

I'd treat it like swept up leaves. Chop it up & put it in sturdy plastic bags with plenty of air holes. Once it's broken down a bit then add to compost.
I've wanted, for a couple of years, to try Morello cherries in a shady spot but have been too busy killing gooseberry plants...
