I had to cut mine down as it was in a dead tree that needed removing. I cut it all down so that I was left with 2-3ft of stems. they quite happily broke bud and regrew happily.

If you can, wait till it has flowered, then cut it back hard...

I had to cut mine back to the ground to allow for the wall to be painted. It grew back and was flowering profusely within 2 years.
