I have several phormiums in my garden and all have had around a third of the leaves chewed off at ground level. One of the smaller ones I lifted out of the soil and most of its roots had gone. Anyone know what's doing this and any tips to prevent "it" from chewing anymore leaves and roots? Thanks

Most likely mice chewing the leaves? Also worth a look into the centre of the plant for overwintering snails, they could be waking up hungry

No grubs seaburngirl, further research does hint at mice or voles, thanks both.

chewed roots hints at vine weevil grubs. did you see any cm long white c shaped brown headed grubs?
though you wouldn't find them chewing the leaves.
