Has anyone had squirrels wantonly take the buds off their camellia bushes and just drop them on the floor. I have a pink camellia just breaking bud and have just observed this behaviour from the window today.

not on my camellia but on a lovely double pink hellebore grrr. the male was showing off to the females . Told him to get her a box of chocolates but he doesn't seem to take notice!

Wow! Is that why they do it? I remember that at work the pigeons would peck off the wisteria buds much to my despair. I wonder now whether they were showing off to females and couldn't access a box of chocs! Phloxie, apologies for jumping in on your question.

I've had squirrels take the entire heads of sunflowers & drag off what must've been 3 times their body weight or more.
Putting out peanuts & drinking water might help, I read somewhere that they dig up bulbs more for water than food

Thanks everyone for your replies. On reflection Sbg I wonder if they are attracted to the colour Pink as it was your Pink hellebores that suffered the same fate as my Pink camellia. I do put out peanuts, wildbird food and water everyday for the wildlife as you mentioned Darren.

its the first year I have known them do it and I put it down to the fact that for once I had tidied up the overhanging plants. giving them easy access. we will see what happens as the year progresses.

Not a squirrel but my daughter's cat brings the flowers in as presents! Unfortunately it's not her camellia but her next door neighbour's.
