Damson advice please. I have a 4 year old tree which produced 4 flowers last year and no fruit. This year I have lots of flowers. If I get any fruit should I thin them out as you would a young apple tree. Thanks Cecelia

If all the flowers turn into fruitlets, you may need to thin the fruit in much the same way as apples, but its best to wait till after June drop to see how many are left by then. The RHS link below has advice on this - in the link, plums are referred to, but damsons are included in that

Thank you - I may thin it out a bit but I am a coward when it comes to pruning. I will have a look at what RHS has to say. Hope to get some fruit this year. Pies and Jam sound great.

Hi Cecelia,
Young damsons are better off pruned in spring (April onwards). You can thin it out a bit now - your tree shouldn't mind.
As it gets older pruning in summer is advised (mine is about 10 years old now and I prune it about July time).
I hope you get lots of fruit! I make damson pies and jam with mine.
