My dahlia’s seem very slow in getting going? Is there anything I can do to encourage them?

Mine are not showing yet but it is only April. I don't expect any visible growth to ubtil mid may. are they indoors or outside under shelter? mine are in the unheated greenhouse.

I lifted mine in the autumn and stored them in dry potting soil under the bench in my unheated greenhouse. About a month ago, I took them out and planted all of them in a crate covered with soil. The greenhouse has been very warm over the last two to three weeks and the shoots are about 6 inches high. Soon I will either plant them out or take cuttings. Have they been in the pots overwinter or have you recently potted them up? Did you examine them carefully in case the old tubers have rotted? Just as an after thought, have you planted the new tubers at the correct depth?

Mine are also in an un-heated greenhouse and showing little sign of growth. They are all new tubers this year. the dahlia I have in a pot for several years is showing good growth. That is one of the Bishop's.

I got a set of 5 a few weeks ago by mail order. I potted them up about three weeks ago and I’ve got nothing either yet. I had them outside under cover but last week I moved the pots out into the sunshine. I was going to poke around in the pots to see if they’d died but now I’ve read this I’ll wait a bit longer. Thank you.

just been out to the greenhouse and of the 6 I have 2 are just showing growth.

Heat will bring them on, but you'd still have to wait to put them outdoors, and they'd need careful hardening off before you did. Its still a bit early for Dahlias to get going without heat...

I should have added that they are kept in a cold frame against the house and in my summerhouse. I potted them up in March and like Bamboo said the nights are still cold so hopefully when it warms up they will grow. Glad to know from everyone else that they are doing what is expected for this time of year.

Jimmytheone- what is the correct depth?

Thank you all. 😀

Mine are romping away, down ihere n the Softy South, even the ones I leave in the soil are up about 6 inches

I bought two new, but different variety, tubers this year and planted in pots in unheated conservatory to get them going.

One started growing more or less immediately and now has embryo bud showing. The other only started into growth last week

If there is anything from this tale, it is patience

As mine are cuttings from last year, I have set them at the same depth as they were planted last year. If I had new tubers, they would have started to produce shoots and I would set the shoots at soil level as the remains of the old stem if that make sense.

thank goodness. I thought mine were the only slow ones. I bought 1 new tuber on line and it started into growth almost immediately. mine from last year have no signs of growth. I made a mistake of thinking they were too dry and added more water but after a little poke around realised that the tuber had rotted in one pot. I'll be patient as the rest are in a cold greenhouse. Only 2.5 deg C last night in greenhouse.

Happy to report that we’ve had a few sunny/warmer days since my question so they have spring into life now. Phew! What a relief, now got to find somewhere to plant them.....

Have to say, I told you so, patience ;-)

Yes Sir! Patience certainly paid off.... However it's nice to ask around to see how everyone else's dahlia's are doing.

dont plant them out just yet as any late frosts will knock them back and may even kill them. mine go out late may early june.

Thanks Seaburngirl. I am putting them out everyday, protecting them from frosts every night. Frost predicted tonight and it was cold today. I just couldn’t get warm, working in the garden today.
