Good afternoon all, this is my Maple tree which I love however I'm wondering has it gotten too big it seems to me that it's gone gappy in the middle, should it be pruned at some stage? Many thanks.

I have always pruned my maples to keep them looking there best , you can prune them, but for most Acers it’s a case of taking off a bit here and there to keep it looking it’s natural shape, on occasions, I have renovated maples and that means cutting down large specimens from twenty odd feet to six feet and the response has been good but slow, it works well, I always carry out slight thinning or renovation at this time of year, with yours it just needs a little taking off to keep the shape balanced.

Maples don’t really like to be pruned unless there is a drastic problem. I’d be inclined to leave well alone.
