What to do with Gaura.
Last year's plants are fresh-looking and I'm wondering whether I should leave them or cut them back when growth shows at base.

Thanks SBG. The last ones I got didn't survive the winter so I'm pleased these have lasted. I can't remember a frost in this garden this year.

Hi, you shouldn't have had a problem with frost !! Gaura are fully hardy, although it may have been a combination of cold and wet together, Derek.

I agree, cut them back, clear out all debris, give them space to show off. One of my favorite garden plants. No fertilizer for this one though.

Thankyou Derekm. Yes it is generally pretty wet around here so I'm sure you're right. I didn't know they are frost hardy.
Bathgate. I must remember that they don't need feeding. I didn't know that either or I've forgotten it. I love them too.
When I think about it, there is nothing in that bed which will need feeding, or perhaps the Veronica will. I'll have to check.

They love lean, gritty, loose sandy soil like many other prairie plants. Fertilizer may actually kill them or prevent flowering. They have a big long tap root that goes down deep like a carrot.

I'll remember that Bathgate and won't try to move them. It's easy to break the tap-root as i know to my cost. Thankyou for that very useful info.

When you get the new growth cut the old growth down. these new shoots will flower.
I cant keep these going sadly.
