I have a Viburnum shrub which has flowered throughout the winter. new green is coming but there is quite a lot of seemingly dead wood. Does it suffer from die back because I have lost a similar one totally last summer in the space of 2-3weeks

Are we talking about V bonantense Dawn, which seems to flower these days longer through the winter, but should by now be in full leaf, Tinus is evergreen, viburnum beetle can affect this one.

Is your plant in a pot or in the ground? Does it have symptoms of Viburnum beetle attack?
In respect of pruning, if its Viburnum bodnatense, any pruning can be done now - RHS link below, which has an embedded link to how to prune near the bottom
