Hello. Here is a picture of two plants in my garden. Could anyone identify them please. The one to the left never flowers but seems to be everywhere in my garden. Thanks in advance. I’ve updated this question .... having said the plant never flowers I have proved how unobservant I’ve been all these years. Here is an additional photo showing a purple flower. Sorry everyone but any new ideas now ?

Many thanks for the quick reply. The salvia has very fragrant flowers and attracts bees. In the past I have split it with a spade and replanted and it has always thrived no matter where I put it. I just couldn’t remember what it
was ! The other plant does not have any berries or capsules. I’ve dug a lot up today ( it is abundant) to make some space. It has a tuber if that helps ?

Any chance of a close up of the tuber? We can tell a lot from that.

My gardening neighbour seems to think it’s sisyrinchium striatum rhizomatous perennial. But I have to say I have never noticed it flower.

it could well be that but they usually produce soft yellow flowers up a spike that last for a long time. Strange its not noticeably flowered which was why I though iris originally.

Are they planted in the shade,Pjn? Most kinds of Iris won't bloom without some sun.

Most are in some sun.

At least 6 hours of sun?. The rhizomes look like Siberian Iris.

I’ve included a picture of a purple flower that has appeared. I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never paid much attention to this in the past. It is only because it is now so prolific I have had to clear some out that I’ve started to pay more attention !

It is Iris foetidissima, also known as the stinking iris, gladdon, Gladwin iris, roast-beef plant, or stinking gladwin. you should get a seed capsule in the autumn which splits to reveal scarlet berries.
don't be to concerned at not noticing them, I had this for years and it was only when I noticed berries that I looked more carefully the following year. the birds eat and spread the seed.

« Another question please, is this a weed I'm not sure as there is a lot of it...
The strappy leaves could be one of many plants. does it have capsules of orange red berries in autumn? If it does it will be iris foetida.
It could also be Liriope.
the red flowered one is a salvia possibly S greggii or S microphylla. there are many named varieties so it could be one of many.
