Would that weird chap be Adam Frost? I saw him putting in some large trunk pieces to act as seats and then planting ferns and other shade lovers.
It looks an ideal spot for a stumpery, or pile of logs! Not sure about the seating (as per Mr Frost) with the gate there people might think you are taking gate money!

People would have to come a long way up the drive to reach that gate. Mind once this garden is up and running we might just try charging people to look round it (only kidding).

Never heard of him before, but then I rarely watch Gardener's World or Chelsea. And he definitely came across as a bit odd.

He's in good company, the first time I came across a stumpery was at Highgrove, as you could guess it's right up HRH Charles' street

Follow up question. If I use conifer stumps to make a stumpery, about how long will they last before rotting away to sticky sawdust?

a long time owd, there are some conifer stumps up at kielder reservoir that have been there for a good 20 yrs and they are hard as iron.

Not much experience but we did cut down a big conifer about 10 years ago and the stump has just about disintegrated now.

Ta. Some of the stumps were already showing signs of rotting when we dug them out so I assume they would not last as long. Don't want to go to a lot of effort for a short term project. Getting too old and infirm to be able to re-do things in a few years.
