Also continually cutting off at ground level weakens them and they give up eventually.

I tend to use a glyphosate one on yound leaves but if I have cut into thick stems I use SBK [shrub and brush killer]. Though I tend to dig out as much as I can to avoid using chemicals. That is my personal choice however.
