Does anyone know what’s wrong with my dwarf Cox tree? It’s been in about three years but has never been happy. Each year it has a different problem, seemingly. This year it only had about three blossoms on and no fruit and the leaves are turning yellow and dropping off. Last year it did reasonably well for blossom but what fruit developed all dropped off. About 7 feet away is a James Grieve which is doing really well.

Is it in a pot or ground?

I have read that Cox are a devil to grow well, very temperamental

Apart from that I'm no help I'm afraid to say

A similar question was asked quite recently. As Grandad says, Cox aren't the easiest to grow. I would say that as it is a Triploid it needs two other varieties of apple which come into blossom at the roundabout the same time to get a good cross fertilisation. If you look up Cox on the net, it will suggest other varieties which will be compatible. Also, if you do have it in a container then perhaps re-position it in the ground at the end of the year if you have a vacant spot.

There is now a new apple said to taste like Cox but be much easier to grow, and James Grieve is OK as a pollinator. It is called Christmas Pippin.
I would swap them as it is notoriously difficult to get good results from Cox, and it is fussy about the kind of summers we have too My mother had a Grieve and a Cox too,and the Cox never did much either.

Fiesta would be a good substitute for you Cox and a companion for James Grieve. Fiesta is a cross of Cox and Idared.

SG, I've wanted a Christmas Pippin for a while, sadly not enough room left to fit one in.

I did get a Pinova last year while looking at Christmas Pippins, Pinova has Cox in it's parentage.

This is is first fruiting year so can't comment on taste comparison but mine looks productive

My tree is in the ground but your comments have echoed my thoughts as I’m tempted to give up on it. Will I replace with something else? I’m not sure but I could use the space to resite my newly planted Cornus Kousa as it’s not in the right place. I’ll give it more thought.
Thank you all for your advice.

James Grieve is self fertile but even so some SF ones often do better with another pollinator nearby. You might be lucky and have a neighbour with one that flowers at the same time.

I have a friend who’s had a very prolific JG for a number of years with no other apple trees nearby so I think I’ll stick with one tree. For now anyway.

Thank you all
