Calling All Tomato Heads!
At this time last year I had harvested a good number of my tomatoes. At the moment most of them are still very green. I have only picked a handful so far. They have had lots of water and have been subjected to the same conditions as last year. Any ideas?

You could try a bit of encouragement in the form of one or two ripe ones placed near some green ones. Failing that banana skins often work - they both give off a gas that hastens ripening. Or if you happen to have a ripe tomato you could put that next to a green one . All these give of ethyline gas which hastens ripening.

Thanks, Steragram2

Yes, I know about the banana trick and have used it once or twice in the past. I recall placing them on a tray in the greenhouse. However, a lot of the toms are still very small and look like they are not going to get big enough to ripen.

we will blame the weather again. The dull and cooler spell has slowed the ripening. we have a similar problem in our greenhouse too.

I would leave the tomatoes on the vine for as long as possible to develop full flavor. As long as temperatures remain above 50°F you are good. The banana trick just makes them turn red, but the flavor is developed on the vine.

Thanks all of you. Nice to know I am not the only one, Seaburngirl!
Thanks for this, Bathgate. I didn't know that.
I've been looking at green chutney recipes, Steragram2. I have also made a green tomato curry.

There are plenty of recipes online for Fried Green Tomatoes. Not the movie with Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy and Mary Stuart Masterson. Definitely worth seeing by the way. lol. Fried Green Tomatoes is a Southern thang. It must be good if there's a movie named after it. lol.
