We’re having our front garden and drive relandscaped and will have a circular patch in the centre of what is at present lawned. We would like suitable plants preferably evergreen for this among chippings/shingle, bearing in mind it’s exposed therefore catches wind etc. Any ideas on suitable low shrubs and perennial plants which would be low maintenance. We are in Sittingbourne Kent hence soil is quite chalky

How much sun will it get? if it is shady-ish some of the smaller evergreen ferns would work too. Also Ajuga [many different leaf colours available] would make good ground cover.

Thankyou for your suggestions Seaburngirl, full sun comes round by mid afternoon but it’s only part shady in the mornings. Ajuga looks good

Well it really comes down to what type of "look" are you going for, your personal preference and what will thrive in your area. I really like Agastache 'Blue Fortune. Give it a 'google' and see if you like. I'm partial to blue, it has a long extended bloom period almost all summer with blue flower spikes. It makes nice cut flowers too for indoor displays. It's also known as Hyssop and the plant it pleasantly fragrant even when not in bloom.

Hyssop in the UK is an aromatic herb Hyssopus officinalis
The one you mention is called Giant Hyssop here. So confusing at times.
neither are fully evergreen though. though both excellent nectar plants for bees butterflies and moths.

Another thought. There are some very nice variegated Euonymus japonica types. They are evergreen and may be pruned to keep them in good shape. Easily available too.

I have the variegated Euronymous. I appreciate its evergreen foliage over the bleak winter. Silver Queen if you want berries. A very slow growing but well behaved shrub

Fun fact: Hyssop is mentioned a lot in the Bible and was used to tie in bundles above the doorway to fend off malevolent spirits.

Well we could do with fending off malevolent spirits, we don’t need those, especially added to what’s going on at the moment. Thankyou very much for your suggestions, we are considering Hyssop. Regards Andrew Rose

Some of the Hebes would do well in that situation.
