We have a pergola in our garden. Over the years, I’ve tried in vain to get things to climb up it and over it. I need some climbers which are fast growing, are pretty and have plenty of foliage to make it a shady spot in the summer.
Please can anyone make any suggestions?

There are several pretty annual climbers that would tide you over until your new choice settles in. Canary Ceeper is quick, cheap and cheerful and does the job. Morning Glory us classier but not as reliable (fr me anyway). Is the pergola wood or metal?

Thanks for the help.
The pergola is wood. Growing already, I have a wisteria, honeysuckle, a vine and a trachleospermum jasminoides. So it’s quick cover I’m looking for.

I know this wasn't your question but I'll just present it as an alternative idea. Please don't be mad at me. I wouldn't want anything growing over the top of my pergola spoiling the architectural beauty and natural wood finish. They are designed to give you shade by how the wooden beams are positioned. The climbers are super high maintenance and to me they look like 'the brambles -awful. I prefer the clean straight lines & open air - nothing climbing up and over the top. You can also get a canvas top that can serve as a rain guard. Those climbers add a huge weight load to the structure and promote wood decay and lots of bugs & bird droppings everywhere. The wisteria will eventually pull it down. Do ya want that when you are trying to eat breakfast under there?
You can always have a few planters around the perimeter that are much easier for you to manage and nice to look at. I know you didn't want to hear this, but I had to say. Do you want to get up there on a ladder every year so it doesn't look like the Congo? Give it a thought.

The Canary Creeper is quick!

Thanks Bathgate for your thinking about pergolas—but I still want to have climbers on my pergola!
Canary Creeper is one I had been considering, Yorkslass.

We have a Grapevine, more for the foliage than the grapes though! Autumnal colours are gorgeous.

Hi Shirley. We put a grape vine in last year, for the foliage, but I think they’re slow growers?
It had lots of grapes on it—until we went away for a couple of nights. When we got home the birds had eaten every one!
This year I’ve bought little mesh bags to tie on to the bunches of grapes as they appear!

The variety we have is 'Brandt' but the grapes are full of pips, not overly sweet so we leave them for the birds now! One year I did go as far as to make grape juice, too much bother for a small return. I love your idea of little mesh bags though ... :o)

Golden hop would fit the bill but it is also deciduous.
Clematis montana would certainly climb up well and is very vigorous. Soetimes you have to tie plant stems to the pergola as not all are self clingers.
