I have a tree peony which is approx 8 ft tall but bare from ground up to about two thirds not pretty can I cut down to regrow or not help thankyou

I didn't realise how leggy they were until I got one. I passed it on to a friend when we moved as she had more room in her garden and she has it growing up and along a rustic wooden fence which gives it the support it needs and it's thriving, running right along the fence like a rose or a clematis, lovely.

I pruned my P lutea by 1/3 over 3 years and it sprouted from buds lower down. I cut the stems to about 2ft.
Worth a try if you don't like the luck of it.
