Can all Philadelphus be hard pruned to about a foot if necessary? We had one of the golden ones which we did it to a couple of years ago - it responded well and now looks brilliant. But we have another one (different variety but I forget the exact name) I would like to do the same thing to if possible as it is hopelessly overgrown and only flowering at the top. Thanks.

Yes, after flowering you may be as brutal as you please. Give it a good feed afterwards to help it grow new shoots for next year.
