I want to plant a live Christmas tree in a large plant pot outside to trim up for Christmas. Can anyone tell me what would be the maximum size tree I could put into a 16'' diameter by 14'' high pot and how long could I leave it in its pot please?

Do you plan to plant it in the grounds when it outgrows its pot?

To be honest ladies I have no idea what species of tree...just a Christmas tree, and I haven't anywhere I could put it in the garden, so when it outgrows its pot it would have to go, one way or another, sorry.

How about looking for a slow growing evergreen ,that could be trimmed up at Christmas, not necessarily a Christmas tree as such ? I'm sure it would look just as festive, Julia, and hopefully, you might not have to discard it for a long time? just a thought.xx

My late Father always used to cut a small (3 ft-ish) Holly tree from the huge Holly hedge we had and we used to trim this for Christmas. Now, he may well have been tight, but the Holly is also always associated with Christmas, be it on a Christian theme or a Pagan one.
You could buy one of the smaller, slower growing Hollies, perhaps variegated, buy some artificial berries and then trim it for Christmas.

Hi Julia consider looking at the Alberta Spruce. Its a full looking Christmas tree in miniature and is commonly used in Christmas displays

I mean the Dwarf Alberta Spruce

Thank you everyone, but I wanted a 'proper' Christmas tree. But I've come up with an idea. There are a number of Christmas Tree growers who 'rent a tree' for Christmas and there are one or two near where I live.
I think this will be the best thing to do and it will suit everyone. :-))
